Whether you are power washing your deck or cleaning the brick or
siding on your house, a pressure washer is the ideal tool to get the job done. The two main components of the
pressure washer are the compressor, or pressure washer pump, and the wand, or gun. It is important to have a
strong and reliable wand that will allow you to focus the cleaning power directly to where it is needed
most.
There is a tremendous variety of pressure washers available today. They come in different power levels
(including high pressure commercial types), capacities and with different features. When you need extra reach to
clean the siding on the second floor, you can get extra reach with an extension lance wands which extend your
reach. A telescoping wand has the ability to adjust to the job at hand whether you need to clean a building, store
sign or a large truck. No ladder needed.
The pressure washer gun needs to be comfortable and light yet sturdy enough to take abuse without breaking down.
Molded and insulated grips provide an ergonomic feel. The guns and extensions are available in a variety of styles
and sizes in both residential and commercial grade.
All of the most popular manufacturers make a variety of different wands. No matter what size or type job, you
can find the right Karcher, Excell or Honda pressure washer wand.
A retractable pressure wand allows you to reach higher and even in hard to reach areas like automobile
underbodies to remove road grime and other corrosive and rust inducing materials. A high-quality wand will have a
body constructed of durable stainless steel and have a strong insulation grip.
Pressure Washer Nozzles
Quick disconnect type nozzles are most common and are engineered to be convenient yet effective. These have a
1/4" male end that securely snaps into a 1/4" quick disconnect female coupler located usually at the base of the
handle on the wand. There is a tight locking o-ring to ensure a watertight seal. It's important that the nozzle is
properly seated in place because when you are dealing with a high pressure machine you can easily have a dangerous
situation if nozzles are not engaged and you introduce pressure into the system.
These pressure washer nozzles are usually color coded, indicating the type of stream it emits. The red tip is
the zero degree nozzle - these pressure washer nozzles produce a laser like stream perfect for digging into small
crevices. The yellow tip shoots a fifteen degree fan pattern. This is useful for scraping old paint from wood or
masonry or mildew stains from wood fences. The green tip produces a 25 degree fan pattern. These nozzles are best
for all purpose, medium-duty cleaning such as spring deck cleaning or auto cleaning.
There is a black tip that can combine a chemical application with the high pressure water. The chemicals are
introduced to the water stream after it leaves the internal pump, eliminating the chance for any damage the
chemicals may cause to the interior of the pump. Black tips are usually not ultra high pressure nozzles. The
siphoning action allows the chemical injector to siphon chemicals and combine it with the water flow.
Nozzles are
pressure washer parts that will wear over time and will ultimately need to be replaced. When this
happens the size of the opening, which gives the nozzle its unique stream, is worn and no longer produces the
desired results since there will be less pressure. The good news is that you can readily find replacement
nozzles for any type of machine you may have.
